MySpace/MyLibrary

Yesterday, I explored the notion of place or space with some students who had a little time to spare. I gave our D Block study hall students our new Flip cameras and asked them to produce mini video essays on the concept of place as it relates to their library.

Why?  I wanted to introduce the new cameras.  I also wanted to look at the library from a different lens.

Within a few minutes they called me over and told me they had a banner for their clips, an idea that would hold these on-the-spot little film clips together--MySpace/MyLibrary.

It seems that some part of our pedagogy has to do with the social nature of learning and the place where it happens. Place, as it relates to library, means something different to each of these students.

Very, very cool. I love the video and how you're engaging the students in THEIR space. My library will be remodeled over the summer, and while it's not really big enough to have separation between quiet and noisy spaces, and it's used a lot as a day student hangout, I hope it will come a little bit close to your wonderful space. Thanks for the video.

Joyce,
Being a second year librarian, I still learn a lot about my occupation from attending library conferences, workshops and graduate classes, but I think one of the best ways to learn about my occupation and what it means to be a librarian is by visiting other libraries! I wanted to take a moment to tell you what a pleasure it has been to view the video made by your students regarding your library.
It is great to see students looking not just at the stacks as the library, but including places such as the “movie area” and computer labs! I think too often that people outside of our profession do not realize that not only can students gain valuable educational experiences from the books and awesome people that we have in the library, but they can also glean so much knowledge from the use of our Smart boards, LCD projectors, computers, iPods, digital cameras, camcorders…. need I go on? The library isn’t just for books any more!
It is so encouraging to see straight from the mouths of the students what they enjoy about the library, and that it includes ALL of the materials that we have to offer them. I know that we are making leaps and bounds into the era of technology, and that many of our students, like it or not, are way ahead of us on that power curve. I am excited to be able to use those types of media to teach our students, so they can see that the social networking they do online can be used as a valuable teaching tool.
Thank you for showing us that the library is a great place/space to be!

Thanks for seeing what I hoped folks would see here, Jane and Ali. I was shocked how many different "takes" we got on the simple prompt of "place" giving students only a minute or so to respond. We are about so much more than books. The other thing I learned is that there may be something to the idea of spontaneous video essays.
