danah boyd on the importance of being present in kids' lives online (from AASL)

November 10, 2009 Ernie Cox and I had the opportunity to interview a few of the amazing speakers @ the AASL Conference in Charlotte, including researcher danah boyd of Microsoft Research New England, also known on Twitter as apopheniadanah's papers inform our understandings how the young people we serve live and play and work online and how we might respond, how we might be present as adults in a more effective way.

We chatted with danah about:
  • the importance of adults being visible, being present for our students online
  • students who are nonparticipatory
  • the visible racial and class divides in social network space
  • students' digital footprints
  • being sensitive to the reasons behind kids' negative digital footprints
  • our new creatives look very different from other generations' sets of creatives
  • figuring out how to live in a networked world
  • not blocking social networks
  • Wikipedia as a tool to help us understand the process of how information is produced and the information ecology
  • thinking about participation and the role of user-generated content
  • do teens do Twitter?
  • Twitter celebrities
You'll soon find a more produced version of this on the bthere site.

Dannah, Eric and Joyce, wow what a great discussion about our teen students and their worlds which derives so much familiarity with the many online networks. I will be reading more of Danah's writing and research, so intriguing and important for adults and teachers to become more aware of their world.

Joyce,
I was so impressed by this. I met you today in the Springfield HS library. You were so warm and welcoming. And how nice to see fresh flowers on at the desk.
I hope to return on Monday as the substitute for Jeannie Cohen.
