Let's share our media: BookVideoNing

December 12, 2008 The wonderful Wes Fryer, (educator, father, blogger, conference buddy) wondered in his Learning at the Speed of Creativity blog why the growing number of book-related videos and digital stories (home-grown and otherwise) are not being collected in some central, platform-independent web space.

It forced me to wonder too. Though I've played with the idea in blog posts, on our TeacherLibrarianNing, and in BookLeads, we really have no focused space to collect our videos, and VoiceThreads, and Animotos, and other K12 book-related digital storytelling efforts.  And there's great stuff out there.  Stuff related to our state book awards, children's favorite titles, genre highlights.  Heck, you've probably created a bunch and they may live quietly on your own server or in an account on a digital storytelling site.

Wes is right. We should gather them!  They should be way easier to find!

Teachers and librarians, please join me in building a new portal.  I've just set up BookVideo.ning.com. Upload your best!  (And your students' too!)

Many schools, including mine, do not have access to nings at school. Would it not be possible to upload the videos to teacher tube and tag them with a specific tag? Then more teachers and librarians would be able to access them, and it would not require much work, Teacher Tube and tags are already set up. Most teachers and librarians that are doing "book videos" or book trailers are already aware of Teacher Tube and use it.

Robin, I think many of these videos are already on TeacherTube. I see your valid point about tagging. I need to work on that on the Ning. Can we also work to get tools like Nings open in our districts?

I think most of us are working toward getting sites open, but the reality is that we have to deal with what is right now, and face the fact that we don't all have the influence to get things changed immediately. I would like to be able to use the videos now and not have to wait for decision makers to agree to unblock sites. I am glad there are many on Teacher Tube, I have looked there and found several, but I would like us to think about agreeing on a tagging system, because when I search for book trailers there were not that many hits, so people must be using different tags. If we could standardize them (sort of like subject headings-ha!), we could find all our book videos/book trailers in one search. RH
