In response to: Review of the Day: The Willoughbys bb commented: I love your blog because I love that you take book covers seriously. I completely agree about the cover being Goreyesque. I thought the same thing before I hit the jump to read the rest of your review... It's a great cover. If I had a kid, I'd buy this book just for that. I do that - buy books because of their covers. I think the adage that you shouldn't is just, well, dumb...

In response to: Review of the Day: The Willoughbys Fuse #8 commented: I don't know if it was in a magazine article or just popped out of my own head, but the thought occurred the other day that it would be wonderful if a person wallpapered their home in book covers. You'd have to specialize, of course. Pulp/noir 50's covers or all children's books. Still, wouldn't that make one heckuva nursery? Of course, in 10 years they'd want to redo the whole thing, but the idea still works.

In response to: Review of the Day: The Willoughbys Adam Rex commented: I assumed the Goreyness was intentional. In fact, I was certain the title of a particular Gorey text was The Willoughby Handcar until I Googled it a few seconds ago and was reminded that it's The WillowDALE Handcar. So now I don't have any point.

In response to: Review of the Day: The Willoughbys Fuse #8 commented: Aw. Good show, though, good show. Here's how you can tie it in. Joan Aiken wrote The Wolves of WILLOUGHBY Chase and Edward Gorey did quite a few of her book covers. Badda bing!

In response to: Review of the Day: The Willoughbys Tanya commented: Thanks for your thorough review. I just read the book and assumed the cover (and interior art) done by Lowry was a direct reference to Gorey. I had a hard time shaking off the "Series of Unfortunate Events" feeling also, but laughed a lot once I did. However, I am deeply curious to know what a CHILD reader thinks of this book. It's great that Lowry may turn them on to some wonderful classics with her book, but will kids get this? Even if they don't get the in jokes, will they laugh? I secretly believe that less than 5% of the kids who read the SOUE understood what they were reading, let alone "got" any of the many adult in jokes. Maybe that's beside the point, though...

In response to: Review of the Day: The Willoughbys Fuse #8 commented: With "Unfortunate Events" the kids enjoyed the books above and beyond getting the jokes. I always thought "Unfortunate Events" helped make children smarter in that way. I haven't run across any young fans of "The Willoughbys" myself, but that may have something to do with the fact that my children's room has been closed for the last half a year. *sigh*
