Whose Shoes These Are I Think I Know / The Store's in the West Village Though

    November 28, 2008

Not too long ago I summed up a Penguin preview that featured a YA novel's cover.  Here is the cover in particular:

And though I am not a shoe person by nature, I suddenly foudn that I had to have those pumps.  Adorable doesn't even begin to cover them.  But where would I go?  Short of tracking down the Art Designer and insisting they tell me, of course (no use making this easy on myself).

Well magnificent Queens librarian Lori Ess, who should really have a blog of her own because she is fabulous, did some detective work on my behalf.  She writes:

    Betsy,

Sooooo, I'm a big dork.  And I also thought those shoes on the cover of Geek Charming were glorious too.  So I employed my super librarian powers of investigation....  And I couldn't find them.  BUT, I found some similar lookingish ones.

(sorry, but that's as big as the picture gets)

Lori was clearly on the right track, but as I am sure you have noted, it's the color of those shoes that's part of their charm.  I searched a little on my own, but all I could come up with was a lamentable:

    Close but no cigar.

Finally I cracked.  I asked author Robin Palmer if she knew what they were.  She didn't, but she put me in touch with Kristin Smith who told me that she'd found the shoes in a Century 21 in Brooklyn.  Huh!  Story gets weirder.  She sent me this link, identifying the shoes and showing this little puppy to the left here.  Apparently the shoes I've been lusting after all this time come from a Jessica Simpson line.  They're called "Olden" sandals.  And to think I would ever want anything at all to do with Ms. Simpson.  *sigh*

Happy ending, Ms. Smith showed me the image below and there they are.  The shoes.  Now I must locate them online for purchase in some manner.  Until then, mystery solved.  Slap your hands together, you are done.

Next week, my attempt to find the sweater featured on the cover of The Ruby Key.

I feel as if I am living on another planet. I just don't have the shoe gene.

    Oh, WOW. Those... are.... ADORABLE....!!!!!
My post-Thanksgiving goal is to not be a hater or anything, but I'm a little mad at you for getting all the cool shoes. I'm just sayin. Even though you had to, like, WORK for these. They are just too cute.

I also lack the shoe gene, and dare not wear heels over 1" anyway, for fear of imperiling my health and the safety of everyone around me. That being said, those shoes are completely delightful and I bet they will look smashing on you if you ever find them. Good luck!

Wow, as a male and observing from a distance this was an amazing observation of the female psyche and their passion for shoes regardless of your claim of not being a shoe person. It's like you just had your own Black Friday all online.

Century 21 is one of the things I miss most about NYC. Hey and while you're at it, could you find me my Double-H brand Scooter boot? The cat destroyed the last pair. Happy thanksgiving!

Huh! It is Black Friday isn't it? Honest-to-goodness I wrote this piece about a week ago and set it up to post tonight. Lucky timing.

Bets, this just goes to show that it really IS all about who you know. I feel so complete now that the mystery is solved. Now we have to coordinate a matching shoe day!

I like the purplies second to the last the best. And Jessica Simpson actually does make fabulous shoes. Sigh is right.
