My Favorite Children's Books of 2007

    January 1, 2008

As you will see, my list is faulty because I don't see half as many poetry and non-fiction titles as I should.  Still, I sacrificed a lot of blood and sweat and tears to winnow these titles down.  If you don't see your favorite, rest assured that it was the very very last book I cut from the list.  Honest!

In any case, here are the pretty picks that I liked the best.  Yay!

    Picture Books

    • Freedman, Deborah. (Knopf – Random House imprint). Scribble.

    • Lee, Suzy. (Kane/Miller). The Zoo.

    Early Readers

    Young Readers

    Fiction

    • Clements, David. (Simon & Schuster). No Talking.

    • Durst, Sarah Beth. (Razorbill – Penguin Group). Into the Wild.

    • Park, Linda Sue and others. (Scholastic). Click.

    Graphic Novel

    • Abadzis, Nick. (First Second). Laika.

    • Tan, Shaun. (Arthur A. Levine – Scholastic, Inc.). The Arrival.

    Non-Fiction

    Poetry

    • Prelutsky, Jack. (Greenwillow – Harper Collins). The Wizard.

Special YA Shout-Outs to Three Books That Managed to Get Past My "No Young Adult" Stipulation:

    • Moore, Perry. (Hyperion). Hero.

There was such an uproar about the scientific inaccuracies in Florian Douglas. (Harcourt). Comets, Stars, the Moon, and Mars -- among authors of books about science who know about these things. And yet it's getting on various 'Best books of the year" lists and has had positive librarian reviews and gushing teacher reviews..... Why? Their complaint is -- does no one care about giving children wrong information? I tried to explain that he's a popular illustrator, but.... -wendieO

It's not even in my library system for that matter. Who has brought up the scientific inaccuracies? Time to go searching through the old professional reviews, I think . . .

I'm not sure the professional library reviews caught the problems. However, one of the reviews that brings up this problem is on the website of science writer (and ex-NASA flight controller) Marianne Dyson. Her review is here: www.mariannedyson.com/spacebooks.htm
-- and there was a discussion of this problem on an internet group called NFforKids on Yahoogroups. -wendieO

I'm printing this list to make sure that I'm on top of my reading. The ALA's Notable booklist, okay helpful, but Fuse's booklist, essential.
