Video Sunday: Happy Weirdo Video Day

    November 9, 2008

Mark this one in the files of How Did I Miss This?  I loved me my Knucklehead by Jon Scieszka when I reviewed it in August so how'd I go for a whole month without seeing the book trailer?  A mystery.  Enjoy it now anyway.

Thanks to PW Children's Bookshelf for the link.

Mr. David Hyde Costello continues the fine tradition of scaring kids away from their school janitors.  This video comes via Scholastic and shows how Costello teamed up with students to write Mr. Allgunky and the Missing Monster.  Have you noticed that the big publishers are doing more and more of these little videos these days?  Trend watch.

Thanks to Children's Illustration for the link.

And I should probably stay on topic, but these two videos made me laugh, and so I'm declaring today Weirdo Video Day.  I'm very pleased with this first one.  To my mind it's all in the voice.

Thanks to BB-Blog for the link.

The second comes from Japan and I adore it.  Apparently this cat (Maru) is huge over there.

Thanks to BoingBoing for the link.

I agree -- Maru is huge. And funny. However, I still like Simon's Cat (on YouTube) better.

    Thanks for the morning laugh.

Really like that David Hyde Costello video. I've thought for quite a while that publishers should follow the lead of movie studios and package a disk of "extras" with books (a la DVD extras or bonus tracks on CDs). Kids (and parents) would get a kick out of seeing more about the process of putting a book together, and it would give the book some added value.

This would be just the sort of thing I'd include.

I just saw a cool Quentin Blake thing like this the other day -- if it's a trend, it's a good one. It both adds magic and detracts mystery from the idea of being an illustrator when one grows up.

"adds magic and detracts mystery" - nice distinction!
