Ken on RSS

July 25, 2008 Don 't miss:

“You don’t have to read every single RSS item!”

When I first started using RSS feeds, I started off small, a few feeds here and there, but eventually it adds up as you pick up feeds along the way. Pretty soon, you have over thousands of new items waiting in your RSS reader every day, if not every hour. It was overwhelming to the point where I would actually get stressed about keeping opening my RSS aggregator. That’s when I realized it was time to turn to Google… and search for “RSS management tips”…

Now I’ve learned to use the “Headlines only” view to quickly scan the news items, and picking a choosing what I want to read. This post from 43 Folders also helped me manage my RSS feeds:

Sink or Swim: Managing RSS Feeds with Better Groups

The important thing was to pick up what you can, and not worry about anything you missed. If it was worth NOT missing, you usually see it pop up in another blog your following.

Great post Ken!

I also use Google Reader and have a Gadget on my iGoogle main page. This helps me see, at a glance, the newest blog entries. I do sometimes just "mark all as read" just to clear the window!! I do a lot of skimming and scanning. Although, I've been grouping, I hadn't thought to set up a Favorites or "must read" group. Thanks for the ideas.

The best way I can think of managing this information is to look at it like your favourite daily newspaper. I get my local newspaper delivered - on busy days, I try to scan the first few pages for significant stories, a quick scan of the letters to the editor, then I jump to the cartoons and the back page sports stories. If I have more time, I tend to read most of the news stories, some of the letters, maybe the editorial and some more sports stories. When I have all the time in the world, I scan the classifieds, public notices, and a few other minor sections.

My RSS feeds are the same. On a busy day, I find time to check my favourite 3 to 5 feeds. On average days I’ll scan about 15 to 20 others, and on lazy Friday afternoons, or when I have 10 minutes to fill before a meeting etc, I’ll scan the rest of my feeds

I've been using Google Reader for a couple of months now but have decided to try out Netvibes, just to see the difference.

I love Google Reader. I have my feeds grouped into folders like "Library", "Fun Stuff" and "Friends & Family" so I can view similar feeds at once. It provides some variety so I don't end up reading ten posts from one blog one after the other.
