Unsettled by Marc Aronson

November 20, 2008 Marc Aronson made a guest appearance at my school today!!!  Ahhh...two bloggers in the same room - means Amy Bowllan and Marc Aronson, Author of Unsettledone thing - who will get the story out first?

I actually invited Marc in to discuss his latest book, Unsettled: The Problem of Loving Israel (Ginee Seo Books 2008) with our upper school student body.

Just to get an idea of how the title came about, here's a brief blurb about the book: "A deeply personal investigation of an extremely complex moral, political and religious issue by an author whose love for and attachment to the state of Israel is tempered by his commitment to justice for all."

For students, Marc was provocative, engaging, and a brilliantly informed speaker. He also set out with two goals in mind to consider  1) Engage in the discussion -- interruptions are a good thing.  2) "I want you to think."

And that, they did.

But what I loved most is that not only did the students discuss AND interrupt, for those who disagreed with his points - their thoughtfulness in presenting their own personal views made for an extremely balanced exchange.

Again, my apologies for the video piece. This is my second, Mino flip video cam attempt, and while it has gotten easier, there's still more work needed.  Here are short snippets from the discussion.

Marc is an author, a speaker, an editor and he also writes the blog, Nonfiction Matters for the School Library Journal

By going to Book TV.org you can see him in Brooklyn discussing this book from February of this year. This was a great talk and the questions from the I would guess mainly high schoolers was, well, made me think.

Nice comment, though the book I was talking about on TV was actually Race, not Unsettled.
