Rainbow Project, Isinglass Awards, Angels and Demons

It’s hard to believe that a year has gone by since SLJTeen was launched. Many thanks go to Adela Peskorz and her Teens Know Best (TKB) crew for contributing more than 80 book reviews. TKB has new adventures ahead and will soon be launching its own blog. The Interesting Reader Society (from Colorado’s Poudre River Library District), whom many of you met at ALA’s Midwinter Best Books for Young Adults event, will be taking over our teen review section starting with the June 3 issue. So many teen voices, so many books, so much fun!—Dodie Ownes, editor

  • Rainbow Project and Pride Picnic Reaches Out to LGBTQ Youth
With Pride Week fast approaching, it’s time to think about how your library can support LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning) youth. Research tells us that public libraries are often the first place that young people turn to when looking for the information they need, and as a community gathering space, libraries can provide a welcoming supportive and safe environment. more » » »
  • New Hampshire Isinglass Teen Read Award: A Teen-Centered Selection Process
The Isinglass Teen Read Award began in 2001 in Barrington, NH, through a partnership between Amy Inglis, a public librarian, and Amy Perry, a school librarian. They decided to create a local list for seventh and eighth graders to vote on, with input from both students and librarians. In 2003, the list went statewide with support from the CHILIS (Children’s Librarians of New Hampshire) section of the New Hampshire Library Association. more » » »

Attendees were treated to some enlightening (and maybe surprising!) answers from the panel. more » » »

Saved by the Bell - Thirty Second Tech Tips

  • DropBox
I’m currently working on a project that’s part of a districtwide initiative. A major challenge has been dealing with the fact that none of the project team members work in the same building. As a result, we started using GoogleDocs to share group work, documents, and training PowerPoints, as well as photos and Photoshop Images. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long to reach our 10MB upload limit. more » » »

Magazine Magnet

  • By Teens, For Teens
Although most teen areas don’t have a separate teen periodical room, teen mags often have their own small space. It seems like we could take much more advantage of the resources on those shelves now, and even more so when the print versions go digital. more » » »

  • A Million Out of 10Relient K's The Birds and the Bee Sides
The only song that I don't like on this album is Beaming. It's a really good song, but it is only a minute long! I wanted it to keep going every time I heard it. Other than that, this is a really great album. It just changes your entire mood when you listen to it with its awesome and funny lyrics and ironic titles. This album is definitely a million out of 10. more » » »
