Video trailers for Chris Barton's Shark vs. Train (Little Brown, 2010), Tonya Hurley's Ghostgirl: Lovesick (Hachette, 2010), and Carmen Agra Deedy's 14 Cows for America (Peachtree, 2009) are winners of School Library Journal's first annual Trailee Awards, which honors the best videos that promote books for children and teens.

Trailee_logo.1(Original Import)Shark vs. Train, a series of funny contests between fish and machine, won in the publisher/author created video for elementary readers (PreK-6) category, while Ghostgirl: Lovesick, about a teen who must return to the site of her tragic death won in the publisher/author created video for secondary readers (7-12 grade) category. Agra Deedy's 14 Cows for America, the story of a Maasai village in East Africa that helps New York City after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, won in the adult (18 +) created for elementary readers (PreK-6 grade) category.

Meanwhile, Neal Schusterman's Unwind (S & S, 2007), a futuristic tale of a world in which abortion is banned but parents can have their children "unwound," won in the adult created for secondary readers (7-12 grade) category.

In the student created for elementary readers (Prek-6) category, the winner went to a video about Mo Willems's Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus (Hyperion, 2003), a hilarious picture book about a bus driver who takes a break from his route and a pigeon who tries to take his place at the wheel.

And in the student created video for secondary readers (7-12 grade), the award went to Robert Cormier's classic teen novel, The Chocolate War (Random, 1974), about a prep school boy who refuses to be bullied.

"The Trailee Awards are lots of fun—but they also underscore how reading today can be supported by digital media," says Brian Kenney, SLJ's editor-in-chief. "Book trailers can engage readers, drawing them into the book, while producing trailers can give students an opportunity to reflect on their favorite books."

These "people's choice" awards recognize the videos (and the individuals that created them) that do the best job of promoting books and bringing readers and books together.

The winners were announced Friday evening during School Library Journal's Leadership Summit on the Future of Reading on in Chicago, IL. The judges were: SLJ contributing editor Rocco Staino; librarian and SLJ blogger Joyce Valenza; school librarian Ernie Cox; Teresa Schauer, district librarian for Pettus ISD; and Melanie Mubarak, a librarian at Commonwealth Elementary in Fort Bend, Texas.

Very cool. My students love creating book trailers, and I loved "Unwind". It is amazing how my high school kids respond to the book trailers. They can "sell" a book in a skinny minute!
