Each title begins with a dramatic, frightening scenario communicated in short, breathless bursts ("A gunman has barricaded himself inside a house. He has a hostage."), going on to examine the history of the field in question. Enlightening sidebars inform without distracting from the main text. Clear writing and dynamic, action-packed photos immerse kids in the day-to-day realities of these careers. The exciting tone of the book is tempered by a sidebar about tragedies on the job, which offers a reality check. The motto of the series ("Are you ready to take it to the extreme?") sums up the spirit of these books.
