Gr 1-2–Monkey’s friends don’t want to play anymore because they are glued to their screens. Monkey sees this as an opportunity to make money delivering food to them, allowing them to stay connected longer. However, opening BananaNow means delivering, delivering, and more delivering. How exhausting! Monkey is an adorably illustrated white monkey reminiscent of the star of the Curious George books. Illustrations blend cartoonish, colorful animals with real life items, including tablets, computers, gaming chairs, and more. Digital illustrations show great attention to detail on the electronic devices, using bright colors to indicate lights and sound in a way that appeals to younger audiences who are just as drawn to screens. But the book focuses heavily on its theme; readers will be sure to hear the author’s message, which is to put down devices and play together.
VERDICT This book can fill a collection development gap in libraries that seek to address the use of electronic devices, but has limited interest for a general audience.
