Gr 3–5—Hoping to foster an awareness of problematic elements in the world, these volumes provide well-stirred mixes of background information and food for thought. Bees, for instance, briefly describes the insect's life cycle and the role of pollination in creating our food supply, then discusses Colony Collapse Disorder, along with Integrated Pest Management and other remedial measures. Internet not only discusses phishing and cyberbullying but other large-concept dangers like net neutrality. While suggestions for direct action tend to be generalities and the illustrations decorate rather than expand on the texts, these volumes do make for coherent overviews of their topics.
VERDICT Thought-provoking additions—but as the series premise is unfocused, consider individual titles as needed.
