COPY ISBN
Gr 2-6–Exploring 15 insect adaptations, such as coloring, vocalization, and flight, and highlighting a specific well-known insect “hero” that exemplifies that adaptation, like the Monarch butterfly, this book is full of engaging and interesting bug factoids. Readers will learn how grasshoppers make their sounds and that honeybees have their own Egyptian hieroglyphic. Each bug adaptation has four pages, two committed to the “hero” and two for additional facts that display related adaptations on different insects. There are many insect books in the world, but this title is elevated with beautifully detailed watercolor and gouache illustrations. The layout is mostly composed of captioned illustrations with appealing spreads, and bold font is advantageously used to show emphasis and draw attention to key details. A glossary and extended reading list is included.
VERDICT Children will enjoy poring over the presented facts and the exquisite illustrations, and budding entomologists will adore this thought-out and well-designed book. Highly recommended.
