1-4–Dave the Pigeon returns in a book about Big Dinner Day, a day where the “warm scent of crispy things and roasty things and buttered things and sugared things” means tasty scraps for Dave and
his pigeon pal, Skipper. Eager anticipation turns to alarm, however, when they are informed by their canary neighbor, Tinkles, that the main course of the Big Dinner is a fellow bird. Shock turns to resolution as Dave and Skipper decide they must rescue the ill-fated turkey. Enter Robbie Redfeather, a robin just in from the Scottish Highlands, determined to make a cameo appearance in one of Dave’s books to tell his story. Dave’s efforts to rid the distraction are, of course, in vain; and Robbie ultimately plays a pivotal role in thwarting the consumption of the Humans’ turducken that day. This early chapter book will delight readers who like silly stories told by characters who break the fourth wall, inviting them into the fun. Librarians should mention to fans the author’s plentiful and equally amusing Dave Pigeon Fun Stuff activity pages available on her website.
VERDICT Make room on the shelves for this and other “Dave Pigeon” books.
