PreS-Gr 3–The second installment in the new “Amazing Daisies” series centers familiar trio Ava, Hazel, and Ellie completing a new Girl Scouts quest. The girls have teamed up in a race against a team that includes Hazel’s older sister as they compete at a park to take photos that depict each of the colors in the rainbow. The prize for the first team to capture the rainbow is, suitably, rainbow cupcakes. With relatable settings and dialogue, this early reader will encourage children to observe nature and their surroundings. This new book series authored under the guidance of USA Girl Scouts now has a focus on activities that match badge-work that Daisies can complete as a troop. The series aims to promote the Girl Scout experience, and it does a great job at it. Although this second volume is less Girl Scouts–forward than its predecessor, the back of the book offers reader activities that are similar to those done by Ava, Hazel, and Ellie. With Everett’s charming, colorful artwork and an economical balance of brief descriptive sentences per page, this is a fun, fast-paced read for young audiences. Hazel has brown skin and hair, Ava is Black with dark curly hair, and Ellie is pale with dark straight hair.
VERDICT A great purchase for early elementary school collections and for communities serving Girl Scouts.
