PreS-Gr 2–Gunnar the Conqueror and his trusty sidekick Munnin the raven are on a quest to fill the empty hole in their hearts—or stomachs. Tired of living battle to battle, Gunnar goes on a journey to find something that will make him feel whole again. Finally, Gunnar stumbles across something peculiar: a pizza pie. Amazed by its deliciousness, Gunnar decides to dedicate his time to creating the perfect pizza, and the result is this heartwarming and amusing tale of one stubborn Viking’s quest to perfect the art of making pizza. Although the illustrations only use shades of red, green, white, and black, emotions and scenery are thoughtfully done; all characters are white or pink; Gunnar’s beard is white, and there are redheads in some scenes.
VERDICT In a nice change of pace from more serious storylines, Gunnar’s hardships in the quest for a delicious pizza for himself and for his community are wonderfully presented and entertaining.
