1-3–Lone Wolf prefers a quiet life and doesn’t like being bothered, especially not by the enthusiastic mail carrier who keeps interrupting him. But when he finally finds his mail, he discovers a pile of overdue notices from the library. His book is due
today, just before story time—his least favorite hour to visit the library because of all the noisy kids. Determined to return the book without setting foot in the library, Wolf tries to mail it back (unsuccessfully), sneak it into a stranger’s backpack (which leads to an unexpected mountain hike), and more. His plans go hilariously awry, and in the end, he winds up exactly where he didn’t want to be: story time. This early chapter book features short chapters and accessible text, perfect for readers just beginning to branch into longer stories. Watercolor and pencil illustrations bring humor to every page, especially in scenes where the illustrations playfully contradict the narration, as when mail clearly flies over the fence in the beginning, while the text insists Wolf received nothing.
VERDICT A funny, charming addition to early chapter book collections that’s sure to delight young readers.
