Murray the (always-hungry) cat belongs to a hapless magician whose experiments have turned a sticky bun into a sidekick bunny named Bun and have also enchanted Murray’s cat flap. One morning Murray and Bun stumble through the flap to find themselves in suspiciously piratical garb in a village market, where they’re kidnapped onto Captain Patch’s pirate ship. Captain Patch sentences the friends to walk the plank for breaking the pirate code by being too nice, but this only leads to the revelation that none of the pirates are actually satisfied by this line of work. Murray and Bun embark on a hilarious romp with the crew of the
Lurchin’ Urchin to help the pirates undo their crimes and pursue their true passions. Grayscale cartoon drawings add to the comedy, as does ample wordplay and Bun’s Groot-like vocabulary (“Bun!”), which Murray interprets with proficient nuance. Extras include a how-to-draw, Murray’s family album, and a diary entry by Captain Patch–turned-florist.
VERDICT With positive, perfectly pitched humor and good vibes about being one’s true self, this third entry in the “Murray and Bun” series is worth purchasing where the other two are popular.
