Gr 5-8–From countries across the world like the United States to Burundi, Graham spotlights the lives of 12 women that defied the odds to lead. Along with insight into each woman’s personal life, the political history of their country is also explained to provide context. Graham doesn’t shy away from tough topics such as war, inequality, or the harsh realities of living under a dictatorship. She tackles these hard topics with tact, purposefully keeping the text at a reading level younger readers will understand. Readers will discover that leadership isn’t limited to outgoing women from wealthy families—many who faced poverty, inequality, or even shyness, and who never imagined entering politics until later in life, also rose to make meaningful change. The book features illustrations instead of photographs, which are beautiful and realistically drawn. The book also contains a plethora of text features that would make this a great mentor text to use when teaching everything from Table of Contents to the slightly harder features to find outside of dry textbooks like sidebars.
VERDICT For collections in need of more diversity in their political leader sections, this book will make a great addition.
