Toddler-Gr 2–This book draws young readers into an inclusive world where feelings are explored. Although characters are never specifically named, families are depicted throughout the text in scenes; there are parents, siblings, children, and friends. Within each scene, a different technique for emotional regulation is presented, allowing young children an opportunity to see how others may identify and cope with their feelings. Where feelings and emotions are a heavy topic for anyone, this text is made accessible with rhymes set to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” Illustrations employ a mixed-media technique that looks like dots on construction paper cutouts. The use of diverse characters, including children and adults in varying ages, cultures, ethnicities, disabilities, and abilities, allows a place for all readers to see themselves and others in the text. Notes to caregivers are included at the back of the book, along with several emotional regulation games that can be used with children.
VERDICT This is a powerful SEL title would be welcome in any collection.
