Gr 2—3—These books begin with an unlabeled outline map of the region, which may cause readers some confusion (the countries are named in the final pages). Chapter spreads are devoted to, for example, the history of soccer in the region; a prominent stadium there; and eight well-known players, shown on their player cards and accompanied by information on their sporting achievements. A couple of chapters cover some basic soccer rules in a scattershot fashion, and a chart summarizes the area's winning record. The index refers to names of soccer players mentioned in the text, but not to topics covered, and the glossary and the websites are nearly the same for every book. Browsers may enjoy some of the material in these books, but they are not essential purchases.
With Mark Stewart. These titles present very basic introductions to soccer around the world, briefly touching on rules, notable stadiums, and players (male and female) from the featured regions. The texts are reductive ("In Western Europe, soccer is part of everyday life"), but fans may find some useful tidbits. Action photographs illustrate basic rules of play and necessary equipment. Maps are included. Websites. Glos., ind. Review covers these Smart About Sports titles: Soccer in Africa, Soccer in Asia, Soccer in Central America, Soccer in Eastern Europe, Soccer in North America, Soccer in South America, Soccer in the British Isles, and Soccer in Western Europe.
