Gr 3–6—Using a graphic-novel format, this series recounts key events in the dramatic history of the American West. While Lewis and Clark, Alamo, and Little Bighorn provide information about well-known individuals (Sacagawea, General Custer, et al), Pony Express, Gold Rush, and Oregon Trail focus on lesser-known figures. Packed with well-rendered, colorful drawings, the stories are brimming with action. Sometimes the omissions are puzzling. In Lewis and Clark, Clark tells Sacagawea, "Goodbye, Sacagawea. We couldn't have done it without you." However, when the famous guide makes her appearances in the book, she is placed mostly in the background, giving the impression she contributed little to the mission. Though the stories are sketchy and lack source notes, they do make for exciting reading. Consider these for entertaining supplements.
