K-Gr 3–Princess Minna is back after The Big Bad Snowy Day. Now, despite Minna’s talent for taming wild unicorns, fighting dragons, and kissing frogs, her magic mirror tells her she is no longer the best princess of all. In fact, things are so bad that, rather than doves flying throughout the kingdom leaving the scent of fruity ice cream everywhere, pigeons are flying about making the entire kingdom smell like seaweed. Determined to investigate, Princess Minna discovers that Princess Sky-Blue, from a neighboring kingdom, is being utterly delightful to everyone she meets—so much so that the whole town is raving about her. Despite Minna’s best efforts to scare Sky-Blue into going back home, nothing seems to work. Feeling doubtful and discouraged, Minna soon realizes that, rather than battling Princess Sky-Blue, she may be able to learn a thing or two from her. Using digital and mixed-media techniques, illustrator Haghgoo crafts brightly colored full-page illustrations. The two princesses are portrayed with brown skin, while other characters have a variety of skin tones. This early chapter book includes five chapters, featuring a large font and no more than seven sentences on each page. Some pages bear only illustrations, and transitioning readers will appreciate the picture-based context clues that support them in decoding new words.
VERDICT A worthy addition to libraries where princes and princesses are popular.
