K-Gr 2—Not to be confused with PowerKids Press's more informative but less titillating 2008 series of the same name, this collection goes for drama. "They squeeze! They chomp! They crush! These animals aren't just strong. Their strength is EXTREME." Each volume introduces nine exemplars of extremity in the natural world, pairing punchy sentences and, occasionally, graphics such as a "Stink Meter" or a "Creepy Meter" with full-bleed (but never actually bloody or gruesome) color nature photos. The choices are often arbitrary, particularly for the more subjective titles. Crocodiles, for instance, make the roster in Creepiest, as do hippos in Most Dangerous; and, justified by the curious factoid that its tongue "is strong enough to hold 50 people," the blue whale is a surprise entry in Strongest. Word counts range between 210 and 235, and the publisher pads two-item further-reading lists with other titles in this series in Most Dangerous and Stinkiest.
