Gr 2-4–From the author of Baby Biochemist comes a space book filled to the brim with some seriously astronomical experiments, ranging from projects with easy-to-follow instructions to more complex experiments that require an adult’s assistance. Each experiment is fun, thoughtful, and sure to offer children new knowledge. The book treats readers like space travelers, communicating via futuristic transmission messages, mission briefs, and captain’s logs, complete with Carl Sagan and Ernst Mach references. The adorably titled “Space Recruit Orientation” is another well-designed feature, helpful for teaching readers the meanings of scientific terms before they embark on the experiments. Note, however, that young readers might be intimidated by the lack of pictures and some overwhelming paragraphs in the experiment directions.
VERDICT Florance’s experimental cosmic handbook is an inventive and informative nonfiction addition for middle to upper elementary students.
