PreS-Gr 3–A giant tortilla opens the door to a celebration of imagination, family, and cultural heritage in this picture book. Siblings Luna and Sol are excited for a day at their tía’s house, including a delicious lunch of peanut butter and jelly tortilla sandwiches. When a culinary mishap leads to a giant tortilla, though, the fun really starts. The giant tortilla is transformed into a cape, blanket, telescope, and placemat. A sprinkle of Spanish is present throughout the story, along with a glossary, song, tortilla recipe, and seek-and-find game in the back matter. While the large amount of text on each page will test the shorter attention spans of the preschool audience, children will appreciate the colorful and detailed illustrations that capture the setting of Tía Sofia’s folksy home.
VERDICT A solid choice for libraries looking to expand their slice-of-life Latinx representation.
