K-Gr 2—This series celebrates cultural, mental, physical, and familial differences young children might notice in others. The books have crisp, full-page color photos placed opposite one or two simple sentences. All of the titles have controlled vocabulary. Each one opens with a brief introductory spread.
Cultures describes ethnic heritages found in America.
Abilities shows children with physical and mental handicaps.
Families covers multi-generational, foster, adoptive, same-sex, and step- and single-parent families.
Look Different examines physical appearances (hair, skin color, dress, etc.). The children in the photos are usually smiling and immersed in activities. The books end with summary statements and glossaries, which are generally strong, but occasionally stumble ("Crowded" is defined as "lots of people"). Recommended for those needing diversity materials for young audiences.
