The garish cartoon illustrations and the ninja focus lead the unsuspecting to anticipate some sort of Christmas adventure…but no, it's just a heavy-handed message with messy meter and awkward rhymes.
Robert Sabuda's The Christmas Story, which covers the same ground, is much lovelier and has more elaborate paper engineering, but this sturdy, workmanlike pop-up has more child appeal.
Stine certainly has fans, but this labored effort is not his best and, honestly, the first 50 pages, in which Rick brags about his mean antics, are more horrifying than the ghosts and zombies. Not recommended.
