PreS-Gr 2–While walking through the streets of Baltimore, the child protagonist, concocted for maximum appeal with pigtails, brightly colored clothes, and a winning smile, laments the state of the neighborhood while going to school; one heart-wrenching sentence says, “The concrete chokes the trees that help us breathe.” At school that child is asked by the teacher how to make things better for their city. In an instant, the book that was visually muted explodes with color as the main character excitedly speaks about painting the sides of buildings with lovely designs, planting gardens, working with the community, and so much more. Readers will be swept away by the enthusiasm for change that is shown and will be inspired to change their community for the better.
VERDICT With an aspirational scenario that many children will relate to, this is recommended for purchase for all picture book collections.
