In illustrations inspired by the colorful and unique alebrije folk sculptures, each animal is composed of vibrant colors and intricate patterns and shown with a happy expression, at times interacting with other animals shown. The names of each animal are given in large white text in English and in smaller, colorful text in Spanish. Background colors vary and help to make each animal stand out. Children are sure to find animals they have heard of before as well as new animals they’ll want to know more about.
VERDICT This attention-grabbing board book about animals is a perfect addition to bilingual board book collections, and would pair well with the “Mexican Folk Art” board books by Cynthia Weill.
