PreS-K–Sheep needs a haircut, and it will be his first. He’s not too sure that a haircut is a good idea, but Grandpa takes him to the Baa Baa Shop, and the excellent barber, Baabara, talks Sheep through the choices of haircuts, dyes, and other treatments. In the end, Sheep is rewarded with a chocolate “baar” as a treat. Warm artwork in a sort of cartoonish style is a perfect accompaniment to this cheerful story of a common childhood experience. The book would be welcome in a unit about community helpers because of the specific vocabulary around the different kinds of haircuts and variety of tools that barbers and hair stylists use.
VERDICT A solid story about a positive experience with a first haircut; this is a good choice for libraries needing books about people in the community for young readers.
