Gr 1–4—Blinky Bill, an adventurous and mischievous koala, leaves the safety of Greenpatch to look for his missing father in the dangerous outback. Based on the popular book series and cartoon TV show from Australia, the movie version has the makings of a modern, big-budget, computer-animated film, complete with impressive visuals and expert voice acting (Ryan Kwanten,Toni Collette, and Barry Humphries). An understanding of the original characters is unnecessary. However, the reimagined characters and their relationship to Blinky aren't explained to the audience, which prevents viewers from truly connecting with the characters. Children will revel in the adventure, but they probably won't feel invested as most animals are often defined by only one trait. Still, the movie overall is enjoyable. The filmmakers do an adequate job of modernizing the story and characters, creating a lot of action and attempts at humor.
VERDICT A decent animated feature that may have difficulty finding an American audience.
