Gr 4 Up—Five 20-minute episodes highlight five different types of bullying: cyber-; homophobic, physical, and psychological bullying; and the singling out of those living with a challenge. Each segment dramatizes the example, and teachers, psychologists, legislators, victims, and sometimes the tormenters themselves provide input into causes, effects, and solutions. Cyberbullying focuses on the inability of the victim to get away from the harasser. Homophobic harassment is a unique challenge for preteens and teens who are just beginning to come to terms with their sexual identity. The physical category is the most traditional form, and what makes it different from regular conflicts between young people is the imbalance of power. The psychological type is different from the others in that punishment is not usually an effective deterrent. Bullying those with disabilities often involves them being shunned by peers as well as administrators, teachers, and other adults. Each section provides welcome information for viewers to get help. There are many selections available covering much of the same material (Hear Me Now: The Bullied Have a Voice). However, this film's episodic format will provide time for it to be shown and discussion to occur in a single class period.
VERDICT While the material presented provides no new insight, the format makes this program useful in classrooms or in small group discussions.
