Gr 6 Up—A group of bystanders watch as two boys intimidate a third boy, and a young man and woman break out of the onlookers to introduce this video on what to do if one witnesses bullying. The young narrators review the steps bystanders can take, recognizing the muddy waters of standing up for the underdog—fear of retaliation or embarrassment. A social worker and psychologist weigh in to emphasize points and to stress that a bystander's first priority is staying safe. Psychologist Robert Eckstein presents strategies developed by the Prevention Innovations Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. Reasonable and effective strategies for dealing with bullies include distracting the tormentor; directly intervening by calling out the bad behavior, which is recommended only if the bystander has a relationship with the bully and feels safe; reaching out to an adult; and, if someone is in physical danger, calling 911. Cyberbullying is briefly covered, with suggestions for acknowledging and supporting victims and responding to comments in social media. Silhouettes and live-action re-creations of the scenarios accompany the information. Viewers will come away with practical tools to apply to situations they may encounter.
VERDICT For all middle and high school health classes and public libraries.
