Gr 5—10—Don't let the comic style of this book fool you. It's actually a wonderfully substantial introduction to bicycling, covering everything from the physics of bikes to simple mechanics to riding safety to dressing appropriately for changing weather conditions. It even includes tried-and-true tips like stuffing newspaper down the front of your shirt if you need an impromptu windbreaker. The writing is conversational and engaging. Robinson's enthusiasm is always tempered by common sense. For instance, she assumes that her target audience is still growing and advises buying versatile hybrid bikes instead of more expensive types that would have to be quickly replaced. The book is illustrated throughout by colorful photos and cartoons that are informative when they need to be (like showing the various parts of a bike), and otherwise dynamic and playful, with a manga look that enhances the book's accessibility. The final chapter covers cycling as a sport, with inspiring short vignettes about male and female racers. The author coaches a kids' mountain bike team and has found a great way to communicate her love of the sport to a wider audience.—Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL
