Election Manipulation: Is America’s Voting System Secure?

Gr 9 Up–Voter fraud, fake news, and the future of American elections are all explored in Allen’s slim, timely work. Following the 2016 election, faith in the United States’ election system was called into question. Former Director of the FBI Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel to lead an investigation into allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Mueller uncovered several instances of Russian involvement that attempted to influence the election outcome, namely through social media campaigns and cyber attacks against the Democratic National Committee. The Mueller Report has raised many concerns about the future of American elections. In advance of the 2020 election, U.S. intelligence agencies have warned about future attacks. In response, the National Security Agency and United States Cyber Command are making attempts to combat any tampering with the election. Allen recounts their efforts and then further explains the threats facing the integrity of the country’s election process. Most interestingly, he dives into the world of fake news and the impact it has when widely spread on social media.
