K-Gr 2–Delightfully funny, this title captures those awkward moments that happen in everyone’s day but create anxiety for young, self-conscious children. Ferret is excited for her day at school but things keep going wrong and she gets embarrassed. In art class more glitter comes out than is hoped for, which showers the room in sparkles. At recess time she climbs a tree with her friends only to realize when she is at the top that she needs to go to the bathroom. Trailing toilet paper behind her as they head off to lunch makes things go from bad to worse until the climactic moment when her teacher, Ms. Rabbit, has an embarrassing moment of her own. That breaks the ice for a class conversation about the stressful and silly things that happen in everyone’s life. The digital illustrations capture emotions, energy, and the hilarity of the different situations as well as convey a sense of compassion for the young ferret as she navigates the simple humiliations of being alive. Laugh-out-loud moments (especially Ms. Rabbit’s hilarious reaction to her own embarrassment) will help this story address not only the common feeling of anxiety, but also engender a conversation amongst classmates and friends about the odd consequences of being alive.
VERDICT A wonderful addition to classroom and library shelves that will help teachers and children engage in conversations about compassion and helping one another out during inevitable moments of embarrassment. Recommended.
