Gr 9 Up—It has been 175 years since a virus killed 75 percent of the humans on earth. Two types of survivors remained, those who were immune and those who mutated. Ally is an Ordinary and lives in a village outside of the City. She has wanted to volunteer to move to the City, but her family has convinced her to stay. Her choice to stay is taken away when she is caught over the border and is claimed by an Exceptional. Ally's life will never be the same. Petosa's characters are shallow, and the story line is predictable. Emily Durante's narration is flat and unpolished. Usually an audiobook enhances the printed word, but this is one example of the book being better without the audiobook's performance.
VERDICT A supplemental purchase for a high school or public library collection.
