PreS-K–In this Spanish edition of the 2009 picture book
There Are Cats in This Book by the same author/illustrator, the cats seem to be speaking directly to readers. The cats encourage children to turn the pages in order to view the objects and excitement on the next page. There are simple drawings of three cats (one red, one blue, and one yellow) and the environments and objects that they interact with. The drawings of the cats are cutouts that were pasted onto the background artwork, making the book seem three-dimensional and collage-style. Speech bubbles let readers know what each cat is saying. The story is simple, and the art is spare, but the text uses larger words that younger children will need to be read to. There is suspense, humor, and cuteness. Although there are similar picture books where the characters speak to the reader (think
The Monster at the End of This Book featuring Grover from Sesame Street), this is the type of book that kids will ask for again and again.
VERDICT This is a fun book that parents and children can read and enjoy together. Great for cat and animal lovers. [reach out to reviewer]
