Gr 6 Up—Youth and adults recount their experiences as bullies and as the bullied. Research and statistics are inserted throughout, although the documentary's main purpose is to produce an emotional impact. Among the types of bullying discussed are physical (involving mostly boys) and psychological (mostly girls) and anonymous cyberbullying, including the compulsion of the bullied to follow social media to see what is being said about them. Also detailed are the involvement of some teachers and administrators in perpetuating a climate where intimidation is the norm and who at times even engage in maltreating students. For many, bullying leads to self-harm, suicide, or retaliation, including shootings. Others are able to respond more positively through art. Leaders of several prevention groups describe ways schools and communities can work to limit bullying.
VERDICT The emotional rather than the cognitive is the focus of this program. For those who need an "it gets better" type of film in a media collection, this one is effective.
