Gr 4–6—Clarion Wellspring and Nan Artifice are witches in training and apprentices at the Willows Whisper Veterinary Practice in their small town. They tend to the magical animals, staff the reception desk, and take on other tasks as assigned. When Dr. Talon and Nurse Chantsworth are called away, the apprentices have to manage an unexpected outbreak of a hypnotic virus brought in by an unattended, swirly-eyed rabbit. In a bright palette of hot pink, turquoise, and purple, even the temporarily malevolent creatures are more cute than scary. The narrative is engaging and well paced, and Davies hints at backstories for each of the characters that suggest further volumes may be forthcoming.
VERDICT Add to large graphic novels collections. Readers will likely ask for more.
