Gr 9 Up—This episode examines the new technology used to study a mummy from the Copper Age discovered in 1991 in the Alps. The mummy, referred to as Otzi, dates from around 3300 BCE, when the 45-year-old man died and was preserved under 10 feet of ice and snow. Paleoanthropologists, reconstruction artists, and forensic scientists conducted an interdisciplinary study to discover his age, genetic lineage, cause of death, role in society, and diet. Perhaps the most exciting element is artist Gary Staab's use of resin and a 3-D printer to make, with painstaking sculpting techniques, a model of the man that could be used for future study. The picture and sound quality are excellent, and the brief reenactments help transport viewers to another time period.
VERDICT An engaging program for those fascinated by the lives of prehistoric humans or interested in solving forensic mysteries. For school and public libraries.
