Increíbles: Las niñas y niños más extraordinarios que he conocido

Editorial Flamboyant. Sept. 2023. 35p. tr. from Irene Vílchez . Tr $29.04. ISBN 9788419401649. SP.
Gr 2-5–A narrator, who looks a lot like the author-illustrator, informs readers about the many incredible, as in hard to believe, children she has met on her journeys. There’s Electric Girl, who has electricity emanating from her hair and fingers. Ice Boy got so scared once, his heart froze. His best friend is a snowman, and he has a polar bear for a pet. Feather Boy’s parents always hold him by the hand, otherwise a stray wind or sneeze may blow him away. The traveler profiles almost 50 characters, with a spread that describes their likes, dislikes, hobbies, and more. The cheeky descriptions are sometimes written in small font that are hard to decipher, and include a silly image illustrating the text. Perrin’s renderings are chuckle-worthy, with a loose line and exaggerated features and poses. They are reminiscent of Quentin Blake’s drawings and are saturated with bright colors. This busy compendium may be too much for some readers, but the browsable format and imaginative premise will draw young readers in. A larger-than-life guidebook of outlandish and fantastical figures that elementary readers will pore over.
VERDICT A fun, general purchase for Spanish-language collections.
