PreS-Gr 3—Poppy, the optimistic pig, has high hopes when it comes to skating. But when invited to the World Games, Poppy becomes nervous about her surroundings. Paris is a new place, and the other winter sports competitors come from many different countries. However, she finds they all have much in common, and everyone—whether a panda or a kangaroo—smiles in the same language. The story by champion skater Kristi Yamaguchi is read with warmth by Susie Berneis, while Tim Bowers's sweet and friendly illustrations are simply animated.
VERDICT This is a charming tale that will reassure children that the big world can still be cozy.
