PreS-Gr 3—Thousands of years ago, a young boy, Kali, sets out to learn how to hunt, during which he discovers the pleasing sound his bow makes when he plucks the string. Kali forgets all about hunting, playing long into the night, and even the stars come close to listen. This adaptation of the picture book by Jeanette Winter (Random, 2012) is set to a lively musical score and read by veteran narrator Susie Berneis, whose voice lends a melodic accompaniment to Kali's lovely song. Through Kali, Winter reveals the value of celebrating individuality and finding beauty in the world, even where it may not be expected. Her scanned pen-and ink-illustrations complement the text well and make this a title sure to be popular.
