La azotea de mi abuela

K-Gr 2–The love between a young girl and her grandmother is demonstrated in this poignant picture book about distance between loved ones. A young girl has to travel quite a long way to see her grandmother: by car, airplane, and bus. When she arrives, she and her Abuela spend a magical time up on the rooftop of Abuela’s home, where they can see happenings in the neighborhood, such as parties, hills in the distance, and the volcano Popocatépetl. The young girl spends such a peaceful time with her Abuela, it is bittersweet when she finally must return home, where she goes up to the rooftop and thinks of her Abuela. This bilingual picture book perfectly conveys the love between the two characters and the tranquility that they enjoy on the rooftop, with colorful illustrations that contribute to the peaceful atmosphere.
