It chronicles the effort of schoolchildren who, after hearing Martin Luther King, Jr. speak, marched for civil rights, despite facing vitriol and violence. Frank Morrison's Coretta Scott King Honor Award-winning illustrations depict both the dark and the light, reflecting the emotions felt by the children and their families during this momentous part of history. A score at times soft and heartbreaking becomes upbeat and hopeful as the children are able to play in parks and enjoy meals at diners where they had not been able to before. An important time line of events, an afterword, and an author's statement accompany the animated story. Inspiring and important.
