K-Gr 2—Lyra searches for her rabbit after it disappears into the sea with a school of flying fish. She befriends a turtle, who invites her into his mansion of a shell. Despite his proper manners, art collection, and gold-rimmed teacups, Timothy craves adventure and transforms his shell into a well-rigged submersible. He and Lyra encounter a shyster shark but manage ultimately to find W. Rabbit, a star student attending flying instruction for fish. The text-heavy story has poetically constructed phrases and sound effects, but it drags at times. The lovely line drawings and watercolors are reminiscent of old-fashioned fantasy illustrations. Rounded lines, muted colors, and back details that vanish all add to the dreaminess. An additional purchase with limited child appeal.—
