K-Gr 2—Lyra searches for her rabbit after it disappears into the sea with a school of flying fish. She befriends a turtle, who invites her into his mansion of a shell. Despite his proper manners, art collection, and gold-rimmed teacups, Timothy craves adventure and transforms his shell into a well-rigged submersible. He and Lyra encounter a shyster shark but manage ultimately to find W. Rabbit, a star student attending flying instruction for fish. The text-heavy story has poetically constructed phrases and sound effects, but it drags at times. The lovely line drawings and watercolors are reminiscent of old-fashioned fantasy illustrations. Rounded lines, muted colors, and back details that vanish all add to the dreaminess. An additional purchase with limited child appeal.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA
